Upon the thirsty ground
Though desert surrounds
Without a sound
In desert, yet
I drown
My thoughts have eaten daylight
And fed upon my bones
And though I groan
All alone
I'm longing for
My home
And when this dry and dirty prison
Chokes me near to death
When the lies I so despise
Soon rob me of my breath
I'll lift my eyes to heaven
Even though I cannot see
And finally find that joy is mine
When rest is found in thee
When will I learn to listen?
When crying stops
And all is still
When joy and peace
Bequeathed in will
Have seemed to hide beneath this tide
And what is left
But self and pride?
When will I surrender?
When I have met
This broken life
And let him heal
Amidst the strife
And burn away the ugly dross
So truth redeems
The deadly loss
When will I see the end?
When he returns
And brings me in
When in that final
Day I win
And sing on that eternal shore
"I'll love you Jesus"
Forevermore
